The world as we all know it is now connected in several ways, therefore any occurrence - be it natural or anthropogenic- impacts us all either as individuals or as a community. Recent developments show that the sale of certain food items has now been banned in Japan. What has this got to do with you, you may ask?
On April 26 1986, there was a nuclear accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (Formerly known as Ukrainian SSR), this accident occurred mostly due to operating errors; instruction and design deficiencies. This resulted in an international spread of radioactive substances, which were detected several European countries away which affected the weather conditions, contaminated food products and some plant species. As of today, some areas are still prohibited for resettlement.
Therefore, if an event which was an accident at the Chernobyl Power Plant had such an impact on Europe, what are we then to say about what is on-going in Japan, the psychological effects or the unmentioned aftermath of the Tsunami which is being put on hold because of the more gregarious state of the nuclear plant at Fukushima- which now has a 20km prohibition due to leaks occurring.
Japan as we know has the 3rd largest economy in the world, we all benefit from items produced in the nation daily- directly or otherwise, and if these leaks (radiation) continue what are the assurances that the contamination will not be introduced in several unimaginable ways across the globe- such as in the new car that you have just bought or that designer jacket you newly acquired, or that imported tin of biscuits you crave so much?
Can we then say, in order to preserve our environment, we need to slow down the use of technology or halt the usage; OR embrace the continuous destruction of the environment (which we pay little or no attention to) and finally pay our way to live on the not too distant planet Mars?
My heartfelt sympathy, condolences and prayer to and for Japan.

Nice piece! Halting the usage is a very dim possibility, its probably easier to start marching to Mars! Maybe the way forward is to find more efficient and advantageous methods that can benefit the environment in some way.
