Shale Oil Is a Ponzi Scheme Bcause of Its Unique Production Process

Shale oil is unique in the way it is produced because it yields a very front-loaded result. Shale producers get 50% or more their oil in the first year that a well is in service. The companies continuously drill new wells to be at peak production levels and keep the cash flow strong. As a result, there has been a massive amount of capital that has come into the market to chase these investments. Ultimately what happens is

Trading Crude Oil Futures: WTI vs. Brent

This is 'old but gold'...

Presented by Dan Gramza, President of Gramza Capital Management, and Pete Mulmat, Director of Education at CME Group
Oil is arguably the world's most important commodity. Crude and its derivatives are found virtually every aspect of modern life. However, the types of oil vary, as do the different benchmarks for crude oil prices around the world. Many may not realize that oil drilled in Texas isn't generally the same product that comes from the North Atlantic. Dan Gramza and Pete Mulmat examine the relationship between two benchmark oil futures contracts: WTI (West Texas Intermediate) and Brent. CME Group offers liquid, deep markets in both products, enabling traders to exploit price movements between them.

FIVE POINTS- Philip Andrews-Speed on Reforming China's National Oil Companies

We bring you 5 salient points from a recent commentary made by Philip Andrews-Speed on the current direction for reform of the Chinese National Oil Companies: PetroChina, CNOOC and SINOPEC.

Philips Andrew-Speed is a specialist in International Energy Policy and Regulation.
1. Big bang or Small Steps; wholesale restructuring or incremental reforms? Far from predictable outcomes.

2. Genesis of restructuring was in 1998 when SINOPEC, PETROCHINA and CNOOC were restructured, commercialized and listed on international stock markets.

3. A culture of rent seeking, corruption, poor capital management and slowdown in improvements in commercial and technical performance exists on the Chinese home front.

4. Local Chinese companies, out of their lack of experience in gas exploration, could not

Iran held the 20th International Oil, Gas, Refining and Petrochemical Exhibition on May 6 for a 4-day period while there are high hopes that, by June 30, the country will clinch a final accord with the P5+1 group on its nuclear program.

The show came to an end on May 9 after four days in the capital city, Tehran. Aimed at attracting foreign investment and cooperation in petroleum projects, the show was mounted at a time when the country’s oil and gas industries, badly hit by Western sanctions, are in dire need of state-of-the-art technologies and economic support.

Goldman Sachs Predicts Oil Prices Will Retrace to Lows by October

Oil prices fell for a fifth day on Tuesday, and Goldman Sachs (GS) analysts believe they're going to drop much further. Although oil prices are trading at their highest level since December, driven by the quick reaction by U.S. producers as well as a large demand response, according to analyst Damien Courvalin, the global market imbalances are not solved and 'the rally will prove self-defeating.' He notes that

Oil price plunge leads to project cuts

Oil prices have plunged since last summer, leading energy companies to slow, postpone or cut about $100bn of spending on new projects. The FT’s Christopher Adams and Guy Chazan discuss the projects being axed and the wider implications for the oil market.

The future of oil supplies

At the Financial Times Energy Strategies conference in New York, leading figures in the industry discuss the outlook for oil supplies and prices. Has the fall in crude prices stopped the US shale industry in its tracks, or are we now in a new world where oil demand can be met at lower prices than in the past few years? Ed Crooks, US industry and energy editor, hears the arguments.

Economic race to extract Arctic resources

Some estimates suggest the Arctic holds around 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil reserves and almost a third of its gas. That means great economic potential for the five different countries which claim territorial rights - Canada, Denmark, Norway Russia and the US. However, oil prices need to be around $80 per barrel to make production viable and environmental concerns are also expected to impact on drilling prospects. Al Jazeera's Erica Wood reports.

Super Tanker: LNG Carrier

A gas carrier (or gas tanker) is a ship designed to transport LPG, LNG or liquefied chemical gases in bulk

An LNG carrier is a tank ship designed for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). As the LNG market grows rapidly, the fleet of LNG carriers continues to experience tremendous growth.

The majority of LNG carriers are between 125,000 and 135,000 m3 in capacity. In the modern fleet of LNG carriers, there is an interesting exception concerning ship size. This is the introduction of several smaller ships of between 18,000 and 19,000 m3 having been built in 1994 and later to service the needs of importers of smaller volumes.

Super Pipeline: Ormen Lange/Langeled

The Langeled pipeline (originally known as Britpipe) is an underwater pipeline transporting Norwegian natural gas to the United Kingdom. Before the completion of the Nord Stream pipeline, it was the longest subsea pipeline in the world.

The project was launched under the original name Britpipe. In October 2003, Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil and Statoil signed agreements to supply natural gas through the Britpipe. The pipeline's construction began in 2004. The largest part of the pipeline was installed by Acergy Piper, a pipe-laying ship of Acergy. Other pipe-laying ships, which were used, are Solitaire of Allseas, and Saipem 7000 of Saipem.

Super Rig: 'Troll A' Gas Platform

The Troll A platform is a condeep offshore natural gas platform in the Troll gas field off the west coast of Norway. It is the tallest structure that has ever been moved to another position, relative to the surface of the Earth, and is among the largest and most complex engineering projects in history. The platform was a televised sensation when it was towed into the North Sea in 1996, where it is now operated by Statoil.

Troll A was built by Norwegian Contractors for Norske Shell, with base construction beginning in July 1991 at a cost of 4150 million NOK, or approximately

Oil Tankers

An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a merchant ship designed for the bulk transport of oil. There are two basic types of oil tankers: the crude tanker and the product tanker. Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to move refined products from refineries to points near consuming markets.

Oil tankers are often classified by their size as well as their occupation. The size classes range from inland or coastal tankers of a few thousand metric tons of deadweight (DWT) to the mammoth ultra large crude carriers (ULCCs) of 550,000 DWT. Tankers move approximately 2,000,000,000 metric tons (2.2×109 short tons) of oil every year. Second only to pipelines in terms of efficiency, the average cost of oil transport by tanker amounts to only two or three United States cents per 1 US gallon (3.8 L).

A Legacy Story: Protecting the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay from Offshore Oil & Gas Drilling

A Legacy Story chronicles the long struggle over decisions about opening Bristol Bay and the southeast Bering Sea to offshore oil and gas drilling. Since the 1970s, people dependent on the region’s rich marine resources have been undaunted in an effort to protect these waters. On December 16, 2014, President Obama announced that the region would be permanently withdrawn from consideration for oil and gas leasing. The federal government agreed that the priority should be placed on sustaining traditional ways of life and the high value commercial fisheries in the region, and that offshore drilling presented risks that were not worth taking.

The story is told from the perspective of those on the front lines – leaders in the region and the seafood industry, past governors and former Interior Department secretaries. By documenting this story, future generations will remember the history, value the enduring effort made to permanently set Bristol Bay and the southeast Bering Sea aside from oil and gas leasing, and be supported in safeguarding the region into the future.

A Legacy Story was created by the Alaska Marine Conservation Council and Nunamta Aulukestai.

Energy Giant Posts Plunging Profit Like Its Peers But Refining Helps It ...

Chevron (CVX) became the latest energy company to report lower quarterly profit on Friday, weighed down by the plunge in oil prices, yet results still beat expectations. The company reported net income of about $2.5 billion, or $1.37 a share, down from about $4.5 billion, or $2.36 a share, a year ago, but easily topping analysts' expectations of $0.79 a share, according to Thomson Reuters. As with some of its peers like Exxon (XOM), the company's refining unit aided results. Earnings in Chevron's refining business more than doubled to about $1.4 billion, as low oil prices helped margins. The company said production grew 4% to nearly 2.7 million barrels of oil equivalent a day.
