Energy Institute
An assessment of nuclear safety in the UK in a post Fukushima world evening lecture

26 April 2012

Time:
17.00 - 18.00

Venue:
Energy Institute Address- 61 New Cavendish Street
London
W1G 7AR

Summary
Some people in the press and in public have referred to the events in Japan 12 months ago as a wake up call, others have called it a lesson we all must learn from. To the nuclear operators, it is more personal, more real perhaps, sobering to watch the three containment structures deflagrate. What next for an industry that views itself as a significant part of the solution to our energy needs (an industry that was in a renaissance) how do we persuade people that nuclear electricity is the right thing to do?

An extensive social programme offers opportunities to continue debates outside the conference and seminar rooms. This special nature of the European Forum attracts around 4,000 participants from more than 60 countries every year.

To enable young people to share in this experience, the European Forum Alpbach Non-Profit Foundation under Private Law, supported by many sponsors, makes scholarships available for students and recent graduates.
Last year, more than 600 students and recent graduates from 46 countries were able to take part in the Forum thanks to scholarships.

Alpbach Initiative Groups and Clubs have been founded in numerous European countries by participants of the European Forum Alpbach. These institutions organise events in the spirit of Alpbach and provide individual calls for scholarships. More details can be foundhere.

The documents available on this site serve to give you an overview of the different types of scholarships, the application criteria and the selection process.

ESCP Europe - Energy Conference Invitation

On behalf of the Research Centre for Energy Management (RCEM) at ESCP Europe, it is our pleasure to invite you to a special conference in London.

Environmental liability risk: a pressing issue for energy companies

Date: 24th April, 2012
Time: 4pm - 6.30pm (followed by a drinks reception)
Location: The Institute of Directors, 116-123 Pall Mall, London, SW1Y 5ED

We are entering a new technological era which marks the end of so-called 'easy oil'. This shift creates an increased complexity in energy projects and a growing concern for both environmental impacts and the potential for damage to local populations.

Furthermore, the mishandling of recent catastrophes by large energy companies - as well as the largely unpublicised leaks - have cast serious doubts as to their ability to prevent severe accidents from occurring and if they do to limit their development.

Given all of these factors, there is a growing concern for how prepared energy companies are to deal with the new risks they face. This conference aims to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and present new research results on this pressing issue.

The event will cover the following topics:
Accounting for 'contingent environmental liability'
Environmental liability: an issue for insurers
Public-Private joint Energy developments: preparing governments to handle risk
Environmental risk: an urgent need for new safety regulations and standards in the Energy industry

Confirmed speakers:
Tony Backos - Watson, Farley & Williams LLP
Dr Duncan Fairgrieve - Tort Law Centre at the British Institute for International and Comparative Law
Dr Maxi Scherer - WilmerHale
Dr Patrick Gougeon - ESCP Europe Business School

Admission to the conference is free of charge, but places are limited to 60 and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To register your place or for more information, please contact Kasia Wolenska viaemail or by calling +44 (0)20 7443 8819.

SPE Scale and Corrosion Conference and Exhibition - Registration Now Open
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the 2012 programme committees, would like to invite you to attend the SPE International Conference and Exhibition on Oilfield Corrosion and the SPE International Conference and Exhibition on Oilfield Scale.

The two conferences will allow for ample meeting and networking with all attendees. We hope that you will take the opportunity this year, to update yourself on the latest technological achievements and industry trends, meet with colleagues as well as make your own contribution.

SPE International Conference on Oilfield Corrosion, 28-29 May 2012.

SPE International Conference on Oilfield Scale, 30-31 May 2012.

Conference date: 28-29 May 2012

Venue: Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre

The format of the 2012 SPE International Conference and Exhibition on Oilfield Corrosion will follow a similar theme to the highly successful 2010 event with a combination of formal paper presentations in the morning followed by interactive discussions in the afternoon.

This year's conference theme will be “Carbon Steel: The Right Long Term Choice?” Carbon steel remains the primary material of construction for the vast majority of new facilities and infrastructure mainly on a cost basis. However, as operating conditions become more severe and reservoirs are developed in deeper waters, the demands on carbon steel are ever increasing. Combined with ageing assets constructed of carbon steel, the material is more often being stretched above and beyond its intended envelope.

This event intends to explore all aspects of carbon steel from initial selection to treatment programmes (both internal and external) as well as integrity management, refinery corrosion and beyond. The event programme will allow for ample meeting and networking with all of the conference attendees.

• Committee

Conference date: 30-31 May 2012

Venue: Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre

The theme of the 2012 conference is “Innovative Scale Control Management”. Scaling issues have always been identified as one of the most challenging areas in the development of a field. Although remarkable progress has been made, with novel and innovative solutions being provided by companies, there is still much to be learned.

Each day of the 2012 conference starts with a keynote address followed by a range of technical and poster sessions. A number of excellent paper proposals have been selected for this event, all of which cover a wide range of topics representing the recent progress in meeting the challenges of solving oilfield scale control problems.

Synopsis

Our bold exploration strategy plainly differentiates Tullow. Our area of exploration focus is clear; Africa and the Atlantic Margins. Tullow's core plays are giant stratigraphic traps, oil-prone rift basins and prolific salt basins. We target discovering big volumes of light oil, for premium value, at low finding costs. As Tullow sustainably grows, through exploration we add scale without adding complexity. We are taking ever more material acreage positions, with sensible commitments and low cost exit points, to significantly amplify the commercial follow-up potential in the event of early discoveries. Our unit of scale grows commensurately with our investment in exploration, from individual high-graded prospects in Tullow's early days, through prolific plays, to transformational basin opening in 2007, to where we are today and beyond, exploring systems of related hydrocarbon basins. We present this remarkable growth story with interesting examples of what we have achieved to date and what we aim to achieve in the future.

Speaker

Angus McCoss was appointed to the Board in December 2006. He is a geologist with a BP sponsored PhD and, prior to joining Tullow in April 2006 as General Manager Exploration, he had 21 years of wide-ranging exploration experience, working primarily with Shell in Africa, Europe, China, South America and the Middle East. He held a number of senior positions within Shell including Americas Regional Vice President Exploration and General Manager of Exploration in Nigeria. He is currently a non-executive Director of Ikon Science Limited and a member of the Advisory Board of the industry-backed Energy and Geoscience Institute of the University of Utah.
