400,000 BOPD: Oil theft on the rise in Nigeria

According to AlJazeera: "A sophisticated criminal network has stepped up its operations in Nigeria's Bayelsa State costing state and oil companies as much as a billion dollars per month. Royal Dutch, Shell Oil Company's Nigerian subsidiary, says that between 150,000 and 180,000 barrels of oil are stolen daily from its pipelines and wells. Government estimates are twice this amount. The trade in stolen oil involves international traders who provide oil at discounted prices to refineries in other parts of the world. And as Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow exclusively reports from Bayelsa State, the impact of oil theft on the environment is devastating."

This video is evidence that some elements of the Niger Delta people are CONTRIBUTING SIGNIFICANTLY to the level of Oil Spills and environmental degradation. They turn round and point the accusing fingers at Shell (the usual suspect) and other IOC's operating in their communities. Worse still is the fact that 400,000 barrels of oil per day (according to the Nigerian Government estimates) are "STOLEN" from the nation. To put this in perspective, this is four times the daily output of neighbouring Ghana. How then is it possible to steal "SOVEREIGN AMOUNTS" of oil from Africa's most populous nation that possesses a Navy, an Army and Airforce? That is a question worth $14.4billion annually (value of oil stolen yearly).
